The story behind a photograph: Pierre Chancy and the northern lights
Northern lights 2 – Photo: © Pierre Chancy
Every photograph tells a story. Some, more than others, capture a suspended moment that condenses hours of scouting, waiting and preparation. This is the case of this northern lights image created in Lapland by Pierre Chancy, a photographer represented by the gallery Une Image pour Rêver.
A rare celestial scene captured in the far north
In the frozen landscapes of Kilpisjärvi, in the north-west of Finland, Pierre Chancy managed to capture an aurora borealis with enchanting colors: bright fluorescent green, delicate pink, deep purple… The image fascinates by the richness of its palette and the precision of its composition. On the right, the planet Jupiter shines intensely. At the center of the luminous arch, the Pleiades star cluster adds an extra touch of wonder to this exceptional night-time spectacle.
Preparation, patience and a bit of luck
This photograph is not the result of chance. It is the outcome of long, careful preparation. You need to understand solar cycles, find locations where the sky is clear, anticipate the weather forecast and face extreme cold. As Pierre Chancy explains:
“The aurora does not give any warning. Sometimes you wait for hours in the freezing night for nothing. Then suddenly the sky opens, the light starts dancing. You have to be ready.”
Between determination, resilience in harsh conditions and reactivity, the photographer captures the moment when nature turns into visual poetry. This image bears witness not only to an exceptional phenomenon but also to the photographer’s commitment to creating a unique work of art.
A work of art and a testimony to nature
This image is part of a series created in extreme conditions, in the remote landscapes of the Arctic Circle. It echoes the quest for the invisible, the ephemeral and the sublime that runs through all of Pierre Chancy’s work. Here the aurora becomes more than a subject: a luminous story written into the northern night, both fragile and intense.
Through his photographs, the artist invites us to an active form of contemplation. It is not only about looking at a beautiful picture but about feeling what it suggests, the silence, the sense of wonder, the tiny place of human beings in the universe.
