She therefore appears as the only truly active person in the scene, while the other motorists drive past without stopping.

This independence gives the photograph a more complex meaning today. The woman embraces her femininity, her sensuality and her ability to manage on her own. She implicitly challenges the idea that elegance, seduction or a highly feminine appearance are incompatible with technical skill. In a motoring world long regarded as male-dominated, she takes control of the situation without sacrificing her style.

The words “En panne” consequently become deliberately ambiguous. They obviously refer to the immobilised Porsche, but they may also be understood as a humorous comment on the prejudices of the period. The woman herself is not “broken down”, she acts, repairs and remains in control of the situation.

The presence of the Saab 9000 in the background also strengthens the historical interest of the image. The scene brings together two emblematic cars of the 1990s, the spectacular Porsche 930 and the more understated Saab 9000, absorbed into the everyday flow of traffic.

Presented today as a work of fine-art automotive photography, this image bears witness both to a dated advertising aesthetic and to a more assertive representation of women than may initially appear. It allows us to look back critically at the visual codes of the 1990s without denying them, while revealing an independent woman who, despite an openly sexy staging, takes charge of the situation and repairs her car by herself.

En panne thus becomes an image built on contrast, between seduction and independence, appearance and competence, advertising heritage and contemporary reinterpretation.
